Non-Gimmicky Getaways

Tagged: Valentines Day Travel Romantic Getaways

It’s highly unlikely consumerism will let you forget, but we thought we’d remind you that Valentine’s Day is coming and along with it as many clichés as you can count.

Roses, chocolates, weekends in Paris, teddy bears and of course, candlelight.

So how about being a little bit different this year? Leave the Paris guidebook at home and surprise your better half with a romantic trip somewhere more original.

Here’s our top 3 non-gimmicky getaways…

Marrakech

One of the best reasons to visit Marrakech is the chance to sit down and have a chat with the ever-talkative locals. They tell fascinating tales of North Africa that most of us would otherwise only ever encounter on TV. And there is something undeniably magical about relaxing on a riad roof terrace with a glass of wine while watching the sun set and allowing the hustle and bustle pass you by. Uber romantic.

Points scored with your partner: 8/10 – depending on the quality of the wine.

Dubrovnik

This little Croatian gem used to be the preferred and not-so-secret spot of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (husband number 5 and 6). You can feel extra glamorous perusing the antique jewellery stores, trendy boutiques and chic cafés. And there are plenty of little hidden nooks and crannies for a stolen romantic moment – which you are very likely to qualify for if you do more purchasing than perusing in the jewellery stores…

Points scored with your partner: 9/10 – depending on the quality of the jewellery.

Ludlow

We admit Shropshire is not quite Spain, but a little imagination and planning can go a long way. Home to one of the recently crowned best restaurants in Britain, the Michelin starred Mr Underhill’s, this town has become a foodie’s delight. So give a little love to Britain’s best and surprise your partner with a weekend of old school indulgence. From gourmet sausages to traditional pastries, everything in Ludlow is delicious, so this is your spot if the way to your partner’s heart is through their stomach!

Points scored with your partner: 7/10 – depending on the quality of the British weather.
