All Things Alice
The stars are hitting the red carpet this week to celebrate the much-anticipated release of Tim Burton’s film adaptation of the classic novel, Alice in Wonderland.
Just as the book caused a bit of a stir when it was first published 145 years ago, the film version has rustled up fresh Alice-mania. While you might not be able to catch a glimpse of the new “Alice” on the red carpet this week (rumour has it that the queues have already started forming), there is plenty that you can do to get into the Wonderland spirit.
London – Go Mad at tea
For the whole of March, High Tea at the Courtyard Garden of the Sanderson Hotel is going a little mad. Aptly named the The Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea you are in for a few Alice in Wonderland treats. From Queen of Hearts teacakes to pineapple lollipops that magically turn tongues from cold to hot and mint chocolate chip ice cream lollipops that explode in your mouth, this is High Tea with a kick. Just don’t forget to dress the part.
Oxford – Do a little shopping
The original Alice actually did exist, although we’re skeptical on the rabbit. She was a neighbour of author Lewis Caroll in his native Oxford and many spots around the town also made it into the novel. The store where she really used to do her sweet shopping still exists and appears in the book “Through the Looking Glass” when Alice visits a grocery shop and is confronted by a sheep (apparently the original owner had a bleating voice). Today you can shop for all things Alice-related, without being bothered by any sheep.
London – Pop Up Shop
Tim Burton’s crazy creativity in the film has inspired some incredible fashion trends for spring. And where is the best place to be trendy? Selfridges on Oxford Street of course. The ground floor has been transformed so that you really feel like you have fallen through a rabbit hole into a whole new world. The ‘Wonder Room’ as it is called will feature some of the costumes from the film and jewellery designed by Stella McCartney. You can also stock up on cool Alice-styled memorabilia like chess boards, playing cards, vintage posters and all the essentials you’d need for your own tea party. But you don’t even need to go inside to get into the Alice vibe. The shop’s window displays have been taken over by Wonderland and recreate some of the film’s best scenes.
And if all that wasn’t enough, a Miss Selfridge joined with Disney to create a 5 piece collection of vests featuring some trendy illustrations from the film. Our favourite is the “I’m late. I’m late” rabbit vest.
Have you gone a little Alice crazy? Do tell!
