One thing that is scarier than going under the knife is having to wake up to hospital food. But apparently that is exactly what the trendy Latvian elite do…

Hospitalis in Riga is one of the country’s hottest restaurants and includes a vibey cocktail bar as well as nightly entertainment. But what exactly makes it stand out from all the other current hotspots?

Well, for one, you have to be coordinated enough to eat with a syringe or scalpel. The modern, minimalist restaurant is decked out to look just like a hospital with everyone and everything getting into character. The serving staff are a little saucy and your meal is served on what could double as a gurney or operating table.

And this is one time when finding a finger amongst your sausages is not going to get you a freebie. The traditional Latvian dishes are mixed in with realistic looking body parts – our advice is not to order the tongue.

The restaurant’s complete authenticity comes from the fact that it is actually owned by a group of doctors who clearly have a wicked sense of humour. No detail is left uncovered with your drinks coming in test tubes and even the odd deranged patient being wheeled by before dessert. You are also free to volunteer to be said deranged patient or try and eat your dinner while wearing a straitjacket…

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but did we mention there are naughty nurses? Let us know if you’ve been!
