The Politics of the 80s

Two things that we never thought would go together: Margaret Thatcher and trendy clubbing. But now they do. And very well we might add.

As the 2010 election heats up, people are getting a little nostalgic for the days of Maggie, legwarmers and neon jumpers. And now there is a place where can all get nostalgic together.

Nightclub entrepreneurs Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling have just opened Maggie, a brand new Chelsea hotspot on Fulham Road that honours Lady Thatcher and all things 80s. According to Charlie, he and co-owner Duncan love the 80s style and music, but find ’80s nights’ to be cheesy and naff. “We wanted to create somewhere which totally encapsulates the period, from its history to its music, drinks and style, where people can relive or indeed live this amazing decade for the first time.”

Everything from the decor to the music is true to that decade, with A Team action figures and John McEnroe posters adorning the walls. Every effort has been made to fully transport you back 30 years with Lady Thatcher’s speeches playing in the loos, legwarmers for hire and barmen who can spin a bottle ala Tom Cruise in Cocktail, not to menion the tables shaped like Rubik’s Cubes and the waiters on rollerskates. And of course, most importantly, the music comes exclusively from the 80s. Until after midnight that is when more contemporary sounds take over, because let’s face it, there is only so much A-ha one can handle in a night.

The best part? You can only get in if you were born in the 80s or before, so you’re guaranteed to be free of any judging eyes as you rock out to Wham!.
